As you likely already know, tomorrow is the 5th installment of Record Store Day. There’s a lot going on, quite a few releases, so here is our breakdown of what to see and buy. There are certainly no right or wrong bets, but if you’re up for an ambitious day, Lockeland Springsteen-style, here’s how we’d roll.
-10:00 am: We’d start the day at Third Man Records. Word of caution: if you want to get your paws on some of the limited releases, you may want to line up much, much earlier than this. Why? To grab the liquid-filled Jack White record. At $100 bucks, it’s steep. But it’s an investment in a collectible item, and an ode to the man who helped make LP’s cool again. Watch a video of all the Third Man releases here. Grab something from the Marshmallow truck before heading over to…
-11:45 pm: Grimey’s. Again, there will be a hell of a line, so if your plan is more about grabbing special releases than seeing music and browsing the stacks, show up earlier. We’d arrive around this time to get a good spot for Langhorne Slim, who plays at noon. After Slim’s set, we’d shop: the entire list of releases is over here, and you may or may not be able to grab some of the ones that haven’t sold out yet. Instead, we’d stock up on good deals at the back parking lot sale, and pick up these if we can find them: Gary Clark Jr.’s Presents HWUL Raw Cuts Vol. 1, Grateful Dead‘s Dark Star: Europe ’72 Olympia Theatre – Paris, France 5/4/72, Iggy And The Stooges‘ Live at All Tomorrows Parties, Leonard Cohen‘s Live in Fredericton EP, Townes Van Zandt‘s At My Window and Caitlin Rose‘s “Piledriver Waltz” b/w “Love Is a Laserquest” 7-inch. Refuel at the Mas Tacos truck, and grab a Yazoo. Then get in place for JEFF the Brotherhood‘s set at 3:00 pm and Caitlin Rose‘s at 4:00 p.m. We’d be sad to cut out early on Caitlin and before PUJOL, but we’ve been lucky enough to see both many times. So we’d head over to give the east side some love and catch…(PS – the full Grimey‘s schedule is here).
–4:40 pm: …some of Ranch Ghost set and Tiger High at The Groove. We’d stock up on more goods, head home to drop off purchases before walking over to…
–6:00 pm: Drifters, to catch folk singer-songwriter Levi Massie. Eat pulled pork, walk home, get car. Go to…
–9:00 pm: Bear in Heaven at Exit/In (I wrote a pick on this for the Scene). Acquire alcohol with any remaining money.
Then fall asleep to the sounds of your record player.
